Many Americans Face a Bitter-Sweet Early Retirement. What Should They Do?

box of chocolates

He was sitting on a bus stop bench outside a tranquil park, wearing a khaki suit, checkered blue shirt and sneakers. A plain white box rested on his lap when he greeted a stranger and offered her a chocolate saying, “My Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates…you never know what you gonna get”.

What a simple, insightful thought. Forrest Gump is one of my favorite Tom Hanks characters. There is so much we can learn from the critically acclaimed 1994 film.  But that quote, reminding us that life is as much of a mystery as what flavor chocolate we will pick, comes to mind when I read about the thousands of Americans retiring every day. Many of whom are being forced to retire before they wanted. The average expected likelihood of working beyond age 67 declined to 32.9 percent in March 2021 according to a labor market study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The same study also indicates only a little over half of workers will work past age 62.

Craft Beer & Why You Need a Financial Advisor

Craft Brewery

On sunny afternoons, my wife and I enjoy finding a patio at a local brewery to enjoy a cold beverage and play card games. Our favorite spot is Living The Dream Brewing in Highlands Ranch (Drink Local!). When there, I suggest trying one of their well-balanced IPAs, a smooth vanilla cream ale or one of their delicious fruit infused beers; you really can’t go wrong.

In addition to enjoying the tasty beers, sunshine and good company, whenever we visit I find inspiration. On every pint glass you will find a quote from Henry David Thoreau that says, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined”. Those words cross my mind often, especially when it comes to envisioning the future.

It’s baseball season! What inning is your financial life in?

Baseballs

“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way life is, with a new game every day, and that’s the way baseball is.” – Bob Feller

Bob Feller, a Hall of Fame pitcher, made his Major League debut at the age of 17. You read that right, 17! Over the next twenty years he would go on to win 266 games, rack up 2,581 strikeouts and pitch 3,827 innings. He also took four years off in the prime of his career to enlist in the Navy and serve our country following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The National Baseball Hall of Fame website shares the fact that, “at the time of his passing on Dec. 15, 2010, Feller had been a Hall of Famer for more years than anyone in history – having earned election in 1962”. What an incredible baseball career and life.

A baseball game is played over 9 innings, meaning Feller pitched the equivalent of 425 games over his career. What can a 9-inning baseball game teach us about our financial life? As a proud baseball and finance nerd – I am so glad you asked.

Why Am I Here?

Danny Kellogg

Why am I here?

Well, there’s an existential question for reflection.

I pose this question not to discuss the meaning of our lives, but instead to share why I chose to join Prosperion Financial Advisors and build a practice as an independent financial advisor.

At the heart of the answer to this question, why am I here, are two things: People & Passion.

I’ll start with people: who I serve and who I serve with.
