In 1972, Norman Rockwell painted Father and Son for the cover of the U.S. Trust Company annual report.
The painting shows a well-intentioned father teaching his son the fundamental principles behind the family’s investments. Dad is explaining an investment certificate pulled from the documents strewn across the table and stored for safekeeping in the family’s strongbox. The attentive son’s blank and anxious expression suggests his naiveté. One can only imagine where he would rather be on a Saturday morning!

The number and variety of financial advisors today is simply astounding. From those who specialize in fortifying money to those who believe in growing wealth as quickly as possible, there is no lack of options when it comes to choosing a financial advisor. But this can be a double-edged sword. The sheer number of choices can often be overwhelming, often leaving clients disheartened and confused.
As a financial advisor who’s helped clients in that very situation, I believe there are three key steps to choosing your next financial advisor and it’s easier than you think.

I’m a big believer in perspective. I believe the right perspective influences how we interpret the world and is key to seeing all the opportunity around us.
These past few weeks we’ve been sharing some perspective on investor behavior and being a successful investor. I believe maintaining the right perspective is paramount. There are two things I try to remember: first, we live in a society of constant new noise, very little of which is positive. Second, the U.S. is only one small part of a much larger world.
For the next six weeks our advisors will explore different aspects of investor behavior and the effect it can have on a portfolio. First, I want to concentrate on investment time frames, and how a timeline might be the best guard against irrational fears of investing at a “top”.
Take a glimpse at the market over the past few weeks and there’s no indication that our country is still grappling with the “Great Recession”. The stock market is in record territory (as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard and Poor’s 500) and recent gains propelled these indexes to their highest levels since 2007.
